Plastering Spatulas - Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about choosing and using plastering spatulas

A plastering spatula is used for flattening, smoothing, and finishing plaster, skim coat, drywall compound, and render to create a clean, even surface.
A spatula has a wider, thinner, more flexible blade for smoothing and finishing, while a trowel is smaller, firmer, and used for applying and laying on plaster.
Yes — especially on larger areas. Spatulas produce a flatter, cleaner finish with fewer lines, thanks to their wide flexible blades.
10"–14" = small areas, patching | 16"–24" = walls, general skimming | 32"–40" = ceilings and large surfaces. Choose based on room size and how much control you want.
Flexible stainless steel blades (UltraFlex/SuperFlex) are best for final smoothing and finishing, while rigid blades are better for initial flattening.
Yes. Serrated/notched spatulas are used for adhesives, basecoats, thin-coat renders, and materials that need controlled application depth.
Absolutely. Most wide spatulas (Skimflex & Refina) connect to extension poles for ceilings, high walls, and faster coverage without ladders.
Wipe it down immediately after use, avoid scraping the blade on hard surfaces, and store it flat or in a protective sleeve to prevent damage.
Skimflex = professional quality, excellent value, wide range of sizes and handles. Refina = premium European-made tools with UltraFlex/SuperFlex blades for maximum finish quality.
Ultra-flexible stainless spatulas (e.g., Skimflex Ultraflex or Refina UltraFlex) give the smoothest finish, ideal for final passes and achieving a glass-like surface.
